Row Houses
The elegant row houses or town houses around
Pulteney Park and Main Street resemble those found in Boston or Georgetown. The
simple, harmonious lines of the block buildings satisfy the most critical
architectural taste.
The builders of a row house had only the façade
on which the place stylistic elements. The federal style was popular when most
of these block houses were built and is especially appropriate to them. Federal
buildings are generally three stories high, square with a flat façade and
stepped gables that are well suited for fire walls. External decoration is
confined to the entrance. Most of the row houses are of Federal design with
later revival additions of the mid-19th century. The Italian hood
moldings, Greek Columns, French mansard roofs have spiced the town houses with
an eclectic variety of unique hybrids. |
